- Hex color values are in the form of a single string. If you are working on a team with software engineers, try using hex color numbers as they will be able to easily copy and paste the code off of a chat or email document.
- If you need to set the opacity of a colored object, RGBA provides this functionality. You can declare red, green, and blue values and additional values for transparency.
- Hex color codes are more compact, and therefore are better for the minimized code. They can become even more compact by using only three digits for some colors (e.g. #FFF), rather than the full six digits (e.g. #FFFFFF).
- Hex improves the load time of a web page slightly. Computers handle binary digits, and one hexadecimal digit can easily be converted into four binary digits, while decimal digits take longer to convert.
RGB color codes, sometimes referred to as RGBA color codes when they include an additional value for an alpha channel, are one of the most popular ways to define colors on web pages. Hex color codes, in fact, use the same concept as RGB color codes, as they both define colors using the RGB color mode. RGB color code values are based on the number system we are most familiar with, the decimal number system. The decimal number system is a Base-10 system, meaning there are 10 unique characters used to define the numbers. The 10 characters used are the numbers 0 – 9. Hex color code values, in comparison, are based on the hexadecimal number system. The hexadecimal number system is a Base-16 system, meaning there are 16 unique characters used to define the numbers. The 16 characters used are the numbers 0 – 9, and the letters A – F.
Usually, RGB to Hex color code conversion is two different ways of expressing the same thing: Red, Green, and Blue color value. The significant difference that could be noted is the eventual consumer of the color, i.e., for websites Hex colors are needed in the form of CSS and HTML, while RGB colors are preferred for printers and other offline establishments.
